For print shops and shops
The most common mistakes in customer print files
Print shops see the same mistakes every day: no bleed, a 72 DPI photo from the internet, text right at the edge, the wrong size. Each one means an e-mail to the customer and a delayed order. Most can be prevented before the customer places the order.
- Most common
- No bleed or wrong size
- Quality
- Photo too small for the format
- Cutting
- Text in the cutting zone
- Colours and fonts
- RGB, fonts not embedded
The list
- Wrong size. An A4 file for A5 print or proportions different from the product.
- No bleed. The background ends exactly at the edge.
- Text at the edge. Text 1 mm from the cut line may be cut off.
- Too low resolution. A logo copied from a website, a photo from a messenger app.
- Missing fonts. A PDF without embedded fonts prints with a substitute font.
- RGB colours. Bright colours fade after conversion.
- White background for fabric printing. A white rectangle around the artwork.
Prevent instead of fixing
The most effective way is to move file preparation to where the customer orders. A designer on the product page opens at the product size, adds bleed, shows the cut line and margin, and flags a low-resolution photo with a warning or blocks saving. If something still needs changing, a correction request sends the customer a link to their design. More: print shop software.
Frequently asked questions
Should a print shop fix customer files?
Many print shops make small fixes, e.g. adding bleed, for a fee. Changes to content and photo quality should be approved by the customer, who is responsible for the design.
How do I prove the customer approved the design?
Best with a recorded approval and date. The kreatorproduktow.pl designer stores the approval date, terms version and IP address with each design.
What do I do with a 72 DPI file?
Check the pixel count. If at print size it gives less than about 150 DPI, ask the customer for a larger file or warn them about the quality.
